There are two types of fentanyl, pharmaceutical fentanyl, and illicitly manufactured fentanyl. Pharmaceutical fentanyl is used for treating severe pain, in most cases after surgery and advanced-stage cancer. Illicitly manufactured fentanyl is disturbed through illegal drug markets. It is often added to other drugs because it makes them cheaper and more addictive. It can be injected, taken orally, snorted/sniffed, and spiked into blotter paper. Illegally produced fentanyl can be sold alone or in combination with other drugs, often without the user being aware. It is almost impossible to know if drugs have been laced with fentanyl without testing with fentanyl testing strips (FTS).

Pharmaceutical fentanyl can be found in "lollipops", tablets, oral drops, nasal sprays, patches, and injections.
Illicitly marketed fentanyl is commonly mixed with other drugs. It is often sold in pill form as counterfeit medications, such as oxycodone, Percocet, or Xanex because it is cheaper and more addictive. It can also be found in a liquid form, sold as nasal sprays, eye drops, dropped onto paper, and in powder form.
