Thinking of retiring?
Here are some of the most common insurance questions and answers!
Q. How do I know if I qualify for retirement insurance?
A. You must be enrolled in health benefits (as the subscriber) at the time of retirement and have a minimum of 10 consecutive service years with CUSD. For CUEA and CE CUMA employees must be a minimum of 55 years old and for CSEA , TEAMSTERS, and CL CUMA employees a minimum of age 50, however, they must pay the full premium until age 53.
Q. What does "consecutive service years" mean?
A. Consecutive service years means years that were continuously worked without a break in permanent status as an employee. This means that you had no separation from the district whatsoever. Permanent status means being employed in a permanent position (Substitutes and ASB Workers are considered to be temporary employees). Employees have a protection of consecutive service years, as long as the separation was within thirty-nine months. Please refer to your union contract regarding consecutive service years.
Q. When does my District Insurance coverage end?
A. If you are a Classified, TEAMSTERS, or CL CUMA retiree, coverage will end when you become Medicare eligible at the age of 65. Certificated and CE CUMA employees and their dependent spouse have the option to keep their retiree coverage once becoming Medicare eligible (per CUEA contract agreement), however, the AB528 rates are much higher in cost.
Q. If I complete my contracted school year when would my insurance end?
A. Your coverage as an Active employee would remain intact through September 30th. If you are a new Classified 9.5 mpy employee and only worked part of the school year, Active employee coverage would remain intact through August 31st.
Q. If I do not complete my contracted school year and retire during the school year, when does my insurance end?
A. At the end of the month you retire (ex. Retirement Date: 05/05/2025, Health Benefits Terminate: 06/01/2025).
Q. How much would my monthly premium be?
A. Retiree rates are prorated starting with 10 consecutive service years with CUSD. Once you have completed 20 consecutive service years with CUSD your medical will be at no monthly cost once you retire. Monthly payments would be made directly to CUSD via personal check, casheir's check, money order, or automatic bill pay.
Q. How would I make my monthly payments?
A. The Insurance department will send you monthly "payment coupons" that you can send in with a check. Unfortunately we do not accept virtual or electronic payments. However, you can set up automatic bill pay with your bank. They would then send the insurance department a physical check each month. Keep in mind that the Insurance department will never have any contact with your bank, and you are responsible for ensuring payments are made each month in the correct amount.
Q. Can I keep my dependents on my medical coverage?
A. Yes, however, you are responsible for their monthly premium.
Q. Can I keep my dental coverage?
A. Yes, dental coverage is available for the retiree and their spouse at the full district cost. Retiree dental coverage is only applicable to dependent children for Classified employees. Dental coverage is a one-time offer, if you do not elect to keep it at time of retirement you cannot enroll at a later time.
Q. Can I keep my vision coverage?
A. No, vision is not offered to retirees. However, you can choose to keep it temporarily through COBRA coverage.
Q. Can I change my plans when I retire?
A. No, you are offered whichever medical and/ or dental plan you are enrolled in at the time of retirement.
Q. Do I still get to participate in Open Enrollment?
A. Yes, you will receive paperwork in the mail annually notifying you of the Open Enrollment period. However, you cannot add any dependents. Once a dependent is removed, they cannot be reinstated under any circumstances.
