TK Enrollment Procedures

TK Enrollment Procedures

TK Enrollment opens on January 29, 2024. There will be 2 main phases for enrollment:

Phase 1 of Enrollment: “TK Priority Enrollment” window from January 29th - March 1st.
During this priority window:
  • Sites will be processing TK enrollment and registration as they receive applicants.
  • After March 1, 2024, enrollment data at the school site will be reviewed and number of TK classrooms determined.
    • For every 24 TK students enrolled, 1 TK classroom will be established. If there are at least 14 additional TK students enrolled, another TK classroom will be allocated.

After March 1st:
If a school  has enough TK spaces for their enrolled number of TK students, sites may place all of those students into the classrooms based on capacity.

If a campus has more TK enrolled students than school capacity, then the following priority enrollment procedures will be implemented to determine which students are guaranteed a space in the school TK classroom capacity:
  1. One of the parents/guardians is a CUSD employee.
  2. There is a sibling already attending the school and will remain for the next school year.
  3. Foster and homeless youth

A lottery will be held for remaining students who do not qualify under priority criteria above, and who have registered between Jan. 29 - March 1, 2024.

Enrollment status will be communicated to families by March 15, 2024.

After determining initial placements, sites will create a roster of TK students and keep a wait list of the remaining students.

Phase 2 of Enrollment:
After initial TK placements are made:
  • If there are additional openings at a school site, any additional students who register after March 1, 2024 will be placed into a class on a first come, first serve basis.
  • If there are no additional openings at a school site, sites will continue to monitor TK enrollment numbers for registering students and place additional students onto the wait list. Once 14 additional students are enrolled at the site, an additional TK classroom may be allocated.
  • Enrollment numbers by sites will be monitored closely. For sites that are “over” in numbers and an additional TK classroom is not allocated, overcapacity procedures will be followed.
  • Site enrollment will be reviewed around May 1, 2024. For any families that are on wait lists, if it is determined that there is not available space at the school of residence, then the school site will work with District office to secure a TK placement at the next closest school with space in their TK program.

Every attempt will be made to place in the child's school of residence. If the school of residence is not available, but another school has space in their TK program, the child will be placed in the next closest available program.
3. Once a student is placed into a TK program, a placement letter will be sent by the Early Childhood Programs office via email to the family which outlines the next steps to be taken in the registration process. Families will finalize the enrollment process at the assigned school site, bringing their placement letter and necessary documentation (as outlined in the email).
